Maybe the very first thing a boxer needs to learn at the start is this one – finding and mastering the stance perfect for his body and technique.
Actually, there is a big number of stances today (crouch, semi-crouch, cross-guard, philly shell, upright, peek-a-boo…) and each of them has its own positive and negative sides.
Of course, there is no stance that can make you win every time or such a thing.
One must do kind of research and find out which one of them is the most suitable for his body/technique for different matches and different situations.
So, every boxer who wants to be as good as possible should learn more about all of them.
But, let start from the beginning and explain why the good stance is essential for both offence and defence.
Every professional needs a stance that will make him powerful, well balanced, flexible but still pretty stable so he can be more productive at ring.
Moving quickly without exposing any part of the body, throwing explosive punches and avoid the opponent – all of this depends on a stance.
If you have learned that all the power in punching comes from your legs pushing off the floor, you will know how important is to have a good position of feet.
BASIC TIPS:
There are two main stances – usually right handed boxers put the left foot forward (orthodox stance) and those who are left handed do the opposite (southpaw stance).
In both cases front arm protects the face and the back one does the same with the body.
Remember that chin is down for the same reason (protection) and elbows are near to the body to save the ribs from punches.
Whichever you choose as the most appropriate, have in mind that hips, shoulders and arms should be relaxed.
Keep the knees a little bit bent and keep the balance between the weight on front and weight of the back leg.
Don’t make a mistake by putting too much weight on the front leg, which is something many boxers do.
Make sure you feel solid over both of them.
Your feet shouldn’t be in line.
Try to put foot on an angle so you can defend yourself easier, but don’t stand too sideways because you will not have good reach for both hands.
Toes should be in the width of the shoulder or just a little bit wider.
If they are too close all you can get is a bad balance; if they are too wide mobility’s level will be much lower (which may be a good thing only if you are defending yourself).
Additionally, heel of the back foot is always a little bit lifted which provides more mobility.
Dropping rear guide, putting front hand too low, standing too square or too straight are some of the most common mistakes beginners make.
Don’t be one of them – put the effort into mastering the stance perfect for you and you will not regret it.
